Walter Simonson was born in Knoxville, TN, and raised in MD in suburban
Washington DC.
He loved the National Gallery of Art and the Museum of
Natural History, not necessarily in that order.
He has made numerous
contributions to the world of comics throughout his five decades in the
industry, including the award-winning Manhunter feature he produced early
on with comics legend Archie Goodwin in Detective Comics from 1973-1974.
Other work for DC Comics includes the Metal Men, Hercules Unbound,
Orion, Hawkgirl, and Wednesday Comics.
Simonson had popular runs
on Thor, Star Wars, X-Factor, and The Fantastic Four for Marvel, and World
of Warcraft for Wildstorm.
He works out of his home in upstate New York,
where he lives with his wife, comic-book writer Louise Simonson.
In 2017,
Simonson was inducted into the Will Eisner Hall of Fame, and in 2023, both
Walter and his wife, Weezie, were inducted into the Harvey Kurtzman Hall of
Fame.
He is currently working on his creator-owned comic Ragnarök, the
story of a Norse god survivor in the wake of the Twilight of the Gods.
His
third story arc, The Breaking of Helheim, won the National Cartoonist Society
Reuben Award for Best Comic Book for 2020.
Additionally, as time allows, he
sneaks in covers for DC Comics, Marvel Comics, and a few other publishers
here and there.
